The Danish Government’s Bill on judges’ behaviour and attire sparked much controversy. Now it has been passed by the Danish Parliament.
With effect from 1 July 2009, Danish judges will not be permitted to wear religious symbols and will have to wear robes in court. These are the effects of a controversial Bill that has just been adopted.
The Bill sparked much debate when it was introduced in 2008. One of the concerns expressed by prominent lawyers was that it fell foul of the Danish Constitution and Denmark’s obligations under international law. But the Bill nevertheless passed smoothly through the Danish Parliament.
